Gastroesophageal reflux disease, otherwise known as GERD, is one of the number one reasons that people enter into their doctor's office. Typically it sounds something like this, "Hey doc, I was just eating some spicy food. I had some caffeine, too much alcohol, something and I started to notice that some acid tasting was coming up into my throat." Now that is a one-time condition and what I can tell you is this, is people that live with GERD experienced this on a daily, sometimes multiple day basis. Now I don't want to talk to you guys all about the different types of medications, the different types of home remedies that you can do. But more specifically, I want to talk to you about how chiropractic plays its role with GERD.Now as we just discussed, what GERD is is when the acid that sits inside of the stomach actually makes its way up the esophagus, or you may know it as the food tube. Basically you feed your body and it goes down this tube into your stomach and it's when that acid comes back upwards that is what is the technical term for GERD. Now, how does chiropractic play a role? Well, there's two things that chiropractors do in addition to giving lifestyle recommendations and/or supplementation recommendations. The first one is this, chiropractors are actually trained to manipulate the organ of the stomach. The way that we do this is we have the patient laying down on the stomach and using our hands we actually go in, as the patient's breathing in and out and take and pull a portion of the stomach downward. A lot of the times we'll hear some clicking, some gurgling, sometimes you'll actually feel the actual stomach move and pull down. Many times people sit just like you are on your computer, on your phone, you're sitting here all day long and the stomach rises and gets pushed upwards. Or a person's not breathing deeply enough and it actually will slide underneath the rib cage and underneath the lungs and that can cause the stomach to become fixated. So that is one way that we work with people with GERD using chiropractic is through the manipulation of the actual stomach organ. The second way that we do it is, it's basic chiropractic. We know that the nervous system controls everything, we find the specific vertebrates that may be out of alignment or subluxated, and we adjust the body to allow the nervous system to work. So typically, those are right around the person's mid back region and we will adjust it to help to create some more fluidity as well as less restriction in the mid back region. So if you're someone that is suffering with GERD, we would definitely love to help you. If you have questions about GERD, please ask them below. As always we're here for you. Have a great day.
